The first step towards forecasting the price and output of the cattle industry is understanding the dynamics of the livestock production process. This study follows up on the Weimar and Stillman (1990) paper by using data from 1970 to 2005 to estimate the parameters that characterizes the cattle output supply. The model is then used to estimate forecast values for the periods 2006 and 2007. Bayesian limited information likelihood method is used to estimate the parameters when endogeneity exists between these variables. The forecasting ability of the model for a two-step ahead forecast for majority of the variables are relatively good and test statistic of the forecast are reported.

This study has attempted to identify determinants of cattle price per kilogram live weight using a log-linear regression model. The estimated model explains about 48% of the variation in market prices of cattle. Price per kilogram live weight of cattle increases with animal characteristics such as age, live weight and grade. Type of sellers, buyers' purposes, festivals, time of transaction and a time trend are also important variables in affecting cattle prices. Farmers tend to sell their animals at price discounts as compared to trader sellers. Cattle sellers suffer from price discounts in selling to buyers with business purposes in comparison to selling to ultimate consumers. Seroprevalencia y factores de riesgo asociados a brucelosis (Brucella abortus) en ganadería bovina de la zona sur de Veracruz, México.

El propósito del estudio fue estimar la seroprevalencia y factores de riesgo asociados a brucelosis bovina en la zona sur de Veracruz, México. Mediante un estudio epidemiológico de tipo transversal a través de un muestreo serológico de ganado bovino. La seroprevalencia se evaluó aplicando las pruebas de Tarjeta o Rosa de Bengala y Rivanol. Se realizó una encuesta por animal y por hato, generando dos bases de datos de los 12 municipios evaluados. Los resultados obtenidos mediante las pruebas de Tarjeta y Rivanol indican una seroprevalencia general del 0.187% (2/1066) para la zona sur de Veracruz, de igual manera, se estimó un 2.4% (2/85) de hatos con ganado positivo a brucelosis. Interval between first dose and booster affected antibody production in cattle vaccinated against rabies

In this study, we compared the levels of neutralizing antibodies induced by inactivated rabies vaccine in cattle by using three alternative immunization procedures. Forty-five bovines (breed nelore) were then organized in three groups (A, B and C, with 15 animals/group). Group A received only one vaccine dose at day zero and Group B received the first dose at day zero and then another dose at day 30 (early booster). Group C was also immunized with two doses; however, the booster was postponed until day 180 after the first dose (delayed booster). Methods of inducing conditioned food aversion to Baccharis coridifolia (mio-mio) in cattle

Three experiments were performed to determine the efficacy of various methods of averting naïve cattle to prevent Baccharis coridifolia poisoning: forced oral administration of 0.5g kg-1 body weight of fresh B. coridifolia; forced inhalation of the smoke from burning B. coridifolia and rubbing the plant on the animals' muzzles and mouths; and introducing the animals into paddocks with low invasion by B. coridifolia. Results demonstrated that cattle forced to ingest low doses become strongly averted if introduced into paddocks 23-26 hours after the aversion. Ten multiparous non-lactating cows were randomly assigned to one of two groups. On days 8 to 12 after estrus, the first group was given 100 ml antiserum against steroid-free bovine follicular fluid (anti-bFF), which was produced in ovariectomized sheep. The second group (control) was given 100 ml nonimmune ovariectomized sheep serum. Six hours after injection, both groups were superovulated with FSH (18 NIH-FSH-S1 units) and LH (0.29 NIH-LH-S1 units) in a 4-day decreasing regime. The objective of this study was to determine nutritive value and sugar soluble carbohydrate ofpineapple residue. Six treatments were (1) fresh pineapple peel, (2) composted pineapple peel, (3) grind composted pineapple peel, (4) pineapple pulpmeal, (5) pineapple leaf, and (6) pineapple crown. The experiment was conducted in completely randomized design. The results were shown that structural carbohydrate was higher in pineapple peel than pineapple pulp, crown and leaf. Fat content was highest in pineapple leaf. Soluble sugar carbohydrate was higher in pineapple leaf and pulp. In conclusion, pineapple leaf and pulp have potential of being roughage source for dairy and beef cattle.

ESTIMATED IMPACT OF NON-PRICE COORDINATION OF FED CATTLE PURCHASES ON MEAT PACKER PROCESSING COSTS

Stochastic simulation of daily slaughter level was used in conjunction with an estimated packing plant cost curve to assess potential reductions in processing costs due to improved vertical coordination between feedlots and packing plants. Results indicate that processing cost reductions of $1 to $5 per head may be possible. Savings result from ensuring a more stable processing volume that is near the plant's cost-minimizing level of production.

The objective of this study was to compare the accuracy between two applanation tonometers, Tono-Pen XL® and Perkins®, in horses and cattle. The eyes of 20 horses and 20 cattle conscious and healthy were evaluated for the in vivo study and both eyes of 5 horses and 5 cattle were used as controls for the postmortem study. In conscious animals, the tonometry was performed with auriculopalpebral nerve block and then topical anesthesia for both tonometers and 1% fluorescein eye drops only for the Perkins tonometer.
